They Spent Years In Prison After Being Framed
Former Chicago Police Department Sgt. Ronald Watts is the definition of a corrupt cop. So far, cases tied to him and his team have resulted in over SIXTY exonerations. The men who he framed all had their lives turned upside down.
Fake drug charges, setups, and more led to prison time for men who Watts decided to frame. These are men who didn’t have the money to hire great lawyers or even pay bail. Being poor and Black was enough to get them targeted.
Watts and his team made HUNDREDS of arrests in Chicago when he was working between 2004 and 2012. Documents from law enforcement show Watts was planting evidence and making up charges.
Worse yet, there are likely many, many other convictions that still need to be overturned!
Sgt. Ronald Watts reminds us that not all skinfolk are kinfolk. Nineteen of the Black men who were framed are filing a lawsuit against him, the city, and the police department.
Chicago has a police corruption problem. According to the Chicago Reporter, it’s paid out a whopping $313 MILLION between 2011 and 2017 alone settling police misconduct cases.
Imagine if that money had been put towards the underserved Black communities whose schools are being closed.
