Whoopi Goldberg Is In A League Of Her Own
In sports, the penultimate moment in a professional athlete’s career comes when they win a championship. Football players aspire for a Super Bowl ring, soccer players yearn for the World Cup, baseball players swing for the fences hoping to reign victorious in the World Series, and basketball players dream of hoisting the highly coveted NBA trophy, but no individual player has ever conceived of winning all four of those before they retire.
In the entertainment industry, there is a rare and precious distinction bestowed upon those who are versatile and talented enough to accomplish the impossible - the EGOT.
Whoopi Goldberg’s irrefutable resume is a direct reflection of her dedication to film, television, and theater as she moved from from actress to comedian to Broadway star. Due to her unmatched talents, she is the only African-American woman to ever earn an EGOT: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
In the beginning of her career, Goldberg stood out as an anomaly in the Hollywood scene. A rich-skinned tone, young, African--American actress, she repetitively secured starring and supporting roles.
Her roles in The Color Purple and Ghost inspired current front-runners like Leslie Jones, who could not picture her success in Hollywood without growing up watching Whoopi Goldberg as a positive representative for Black women.
To put Goldberg’s EGOT accomplishment in perspective, only 12 people in history have won all four American entertainment awards.
It’s difficult to truly capture the magnitude of Whoopi Goldberg’s achievements in words, so we’ll let her riveting performances do all the speaking. Come with the PushBlack fam to revisit some of her classic films here and revel in her greatness.
