“The Proud Family” may have been an animated TV show, but it was one that children and adults enjoyed together. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting facts about the show as it relates to our culture.
#1: Theme Song Composed By Solange and Destiny’s Child
It’s an important verse: “You and me will always be tight, Family every single day and night, Even when you start acting like a fool, You know I'm loving every single thing you do.” These lyrics teach a valuable lesson that emphasizes the importance of keeping family close in good times and bad.
#2: Explores Intergenerational Topics
The 2002 episode “I Had A Dream,” sent one of the main characters back into the era of segregation. It was just one of many episodes that placed Black history in the spotlight and helped to explain how past generations fought racism.
#3: Created By Two Black Producers
Bruce W. Smith described how he and co-producer Ralph Farquhar were inspired to create “The Proud Family” because of their own experiences of not seeing relatable Black sitcoms when they were growing up. “It was just sort of the sort of All-American, white sitcom. It simply made sense that we can play in this field too,” he said.
“The Proud Family” showed that we have the creativity to showcase our culture without resorting to stereotypes, and to inspire future generations.
