There’s a gross stigma that women aren’t as funny as men - and in racist Hollywood, that means Black women comedians BARELY get opportunities to showcase their infinite talent.
But one new show is unapologetically flipping this entire script, serving us a hilarious show featuring ALL BLACK WOMEN. And it’s appropriately titled A Black Lady Sketch Show.
Aside from making history by featuring a cast of all Black women, having an all-Black women’s writer’s room, and other firsts, A Black Lady Sketch Show is clearly made with the experiences of ALL Black women at heart.
By emphasizing the challenges Black women face through outlandish and hilarious sketches, the show manages to highlight society’s ridiculous expectations of Black women - and the unfair treatment experienced when said ridiculous expectations aren’t met.
You can also tell Black women solidarity is strong simply by witnessing the A-List Black women featured! Angela Bassett, Laverne Cox, Tia Mowry, Yvonne Orji, Kelly Rowland - the list goes on of Black women in entertainment supporting the show via cameos.
Barriers are everywhere for Black women. And perhaps what’s best about A Black Lady Sketch Show is that it’s creating opportunities for other Black women to break into an industry that denies them access, and showing Black women at home they can achieve anything, too.
