Officer Andrew Delke killed a Black man named Daniel Hambrick in July of 2018, shooting him several times from behind. Now, he’s the first Nashville police officer to face charges for shooting someone on the job.
Officer Delke is being charged with first-degree murder. A grand jury indicted him and now Daniel Hambrick’s family wants compensation - $30 million to be exact. They’re suing the Metro Nashville government and Delke, too.
Daniel fled from Officer Delke, who had MISTAKEN Daniel’s car for one he’d attempted to stop earlier. When he saw the police, Daniel ran. He was SHOT when he did - too extreme for a man fleeing while unarmed.
According to News 2 WKRN, the family’s wrongful death suit states that out of 500+ stops in the year before Daniel was killed, “71-percent of drivers were [B]lack, and 23-percent were white.” With numbers like that, this tragic situation isn’t much of a surprise.
Daniel’s murder has been protested in Nashville and a police oversight measure was passed in November of 2018 to investigate police misconduct. As for Daniel’s family, they deserve to be compensated for their loss, but we know that’s not guaranteed.
