A 15-year-old Somali girl and her siblings were attacked with a hose by Zachariah Manahan of Faribault, Minnesota on their way home. As he assaulted them, he yelled deplorable slurs at the children because their ethnicity is Somali!
He SPRAYED THEM and their house, yelling "f**king Somalians" and "b*tch Somalians!”
Al Jazeera reported that “Manahan told police he was trying to spray a fence, not his neighbors.” Yeah, right. Like we’re going to believe he happened to attack Black Muslims at a time when hate crimes against them are INCREASING.
Authorities didn’t buy it either. Manahan got charged with stalking committed because of bias and the misdemeanor charges of damaging property and disorderly conduct.
Throughout the African diaspora, we face many different types of oppression based on our cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Somalis are often targeted for practicing Islam, being Black, and for refugee status. In 2018, three white supremacists even plotted to BOMB a group in Kansas!
Hate crimes have been increasing for years now and none of us are safe from these attacks. We don’t need Black children still being sprayed with hoses in 2019 because they’re Black. We can’t tolerate that anymore!
