Melissa “Lizzo” Jefferson is here to take up space and she doesn’t care who is bothered by it.
As soon as she and her plus size back up dancers hit the stage in crop tops, bodysuits, or fishnet stockings, you just know she’s a woman that brings great energy! But make no mistake, she is NOT to be underestimated.
Her commercial success shatters the assumption that only thin, white, wealthy women should freely love themselves.
This über-talented singer/rapper takes every opportunity to be a positive role model to women who struggle to accept the body sizes, hair textures, and skin tones that the beauty industry still does a terrible job of supporting.
Lizzo’s feel-good anthems like “Good As Hell,” “Soulmate” and “Tempo” give Black women especially the freedom to dance and celebrate their unfiltered selves.
“If you want to change the game and dress a fat body, call me,” she tells high-end designers.
Those who would do so reluctantly need not apply, since she’s already made a name for herself topping best-dressed lists with stunning red carpet looks.
By staying true to this mission in her art and marketing, she’s letting everyone know there’s still room to do right by the bodies of both artists and the average woman that are rarely represented on catwalks or inside fashion magazines.
