Alderman Ben Lewis was not only the first Black Alderman in the most famous ward in Chicago, but he was well-known for doing something else much more controversial with his political position.
His politics were unapologetically Black, and he used his platform to dismantle the traditional white systems of favors and power. His popularity increased so much that he was touted as the next Congressman from the state! But he took his power even further.
Confident and well-dressed, Lewis cut a handsome figure. He lived well and refused to allow white politicians to control him. He openly defied the powerful white elites, making enemies along the way.
So they conspired to get rid of him. But how could they when he was so popular?
Lewis was found shot to death in his office, seemingly without any evidence as to who did it. Racist politicians and police jumped at the opportunity to ruin his image, and they began a smear campaign to paint him as a gambler, womanizer, and con-man. His murder remains unsolved today.
Lewis’ murder was meant to send a message to Black voters and leaders – that the political process was not for us. We must refuse to allow racists to silence our voices. Though the case is unsolved, justice can eventually be served when we challenge systems that conspire to marginalize us!
