A Different World (1987 - 1993)

Originally a spin-off of The Cosby Show, A Different World gave us a glimpse into the HBCU experience and also touched on more serious topics such as racism and HIV/AIDS.

Family Matters (1989 - 1998)

Also a spin-off, Family Matters showcased a diverse array of characters from middle-class Black life, from police officer Carl to streetwise Estelle to standout character, Black nerd Steve Urkel.

Martin (1992 - 1997)

Considered by many to be the funniest sitcom of all time, Martin Lawrence’s chameleon tendencies were showcased, as he played the main character AND a host of hilarious supporting roles.

Living Single (1993 - 1998)

Recently in the news as many white people seem to forget that this classic show debuted before and inspired Friends, Sex and the City, and Girls, who essentially recreated it with white characters.

The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air (1990 - 1996)

The breakthrough role for a young Will Smith, Fresh Prince was about an upper-class Black family, but didn’t forget about the struggles of regular folks. It had heart and hilarity in equal measure.
