T.I. is a rapper we’ve come to know for being outspoken on social issues. Well, he just did something we’re REALLY happy to see. T.I. took on the issue of bail in partnership with Atlanta’s New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.
After raising $120,000, New Birthday Missionary and T.I. were able to bail out 23 non-violent offenders who were stuck in jail. You might be wondering why it takes THAT MUCH to free about a couple of dozen people, and it’s because bail is really unjust.
Bail criminalizes poverty and turns the criminal justice system into a game that favors the rich and abuses the poor. Innocent or guilty, if you’ve been arrested and you don’t have the money you’re STUCK. That’s why activists have been doing mass bailouts around the country.
What T.I. and New Birth Missionary came together to do is part of a larger trend addressing the terrible bail system. It’s outdated and it needs to go because how much money you have shouldn’t determine your freedom.
While a lot of celebs simply boast, it’s nice to see any efforts a celebrity makes to do something good for our community. We commend T.I. for setting an example of what it can look like to be there for people who are in need.
