The Police Are Costing You Money In The Worst Way

On any given day you might hear about police beating, wrongfully convicting, or KILLING a Black person for no reason. Even though the cops often get away with it, sometimes lawsuits in response to the officers’ actions means cities have to pay up - BIG TIME.

Here’s the kicker: when the city pays, YOU PAY. Yes, that’s right. Your hard earned money - your tax dollars - might go to paying off the costs of an officer who shot down an innocent Black person or beat some kid for no reason. And it’s a high bill!

Chicago spent over $100 million in 2018 alone. The city is getting close to a BILLION dollars paid since 2004. New York? Almost $400 million in the last 5 years. Los Angeles has had to borrow money because they were spending so much on this.

In cities like Baltimore that have major police corruption issues, when officers get caught, this can mean THOUSANDS of cases are affected. Reviews of misconduct might free people who were wrongfully locked up - and they deserve to be compensated!

What’s messed up is not everyone gets paid for what the police have done to them, but when people do, YOU’RE paying. Corrupt police are costing us more than we can ever imagine!
