BBQ Becky and Permit Patty are just a couple of the infamous 911 callers people have joked about for their ridiculously racist behavior. But despite the fact we sometimes laugh at bigots, the problem is very SERIOUS. And one state is actually doing something about it!
State Rep. Janelle Bynum is one of the co-sponsors of a bill that’s on its way to being a law in Oregon. She actually had the cops called on her while she was canvassing for reelection because she “looked suspicious.” This new law will create repercussions for this sort of issue.
If the police get called and the victim of a racist 911 call is able to prove the caller had racist motivations, they can SUE. The law will allow those being discriminated against to sue for up to $250. It’s almost like fining someone else for being racist.
Bynum was reported by HuffPost having said, “A transition has come to our country where we’re taking matters into our own hands.” AMEN TO THAT! We shouldn’t be accepting of racism ever.
This is what we like to hear. Racist person does something racist, Black people take action, and changes are made. The bill should soon be headed to the governor for signing and then hopefully racists will think twice!
