Marva Collins was NOT afraid to take action, and she was about to make some MAJOR moves. It was bad enough that racist teachers in Chicago schools didn’t seem to care about her children, but there was something more.

They didn’t seem to care about ANY Black children! Rather than teaching, teachers kicked them out of school or wrote them off as unable to learn. Sick of wrestling with a racist system that obviously didn’t care about us, Collins did something incredible.

She took her own money and opened a school on the second floor of her home! Collins sought out students who had been written off as learning disabled or unteachable. No one thought the school would accomplish anything with such “substandard” students. Were they right?

Of course not! Collins’ students improved FIVE grade levels just by working with her the first year.

Her fame grew from such amazing results, and she was able to help children across the nation with her teaching methods.

Collins refused to allow Black children to be written off by a racist system seeking to keep Black children poorly educated and oppressed. Like Collins, we must realize when we take control over the education of our children we can keep them uplifted, self-affirmed, and empowered!
