For as long as Atlanta officials planned to bulldoze a historic forest to build a dangerous $90 million police training facility, there has been resistance. And after police killed a protester in January, the violence has only escalated.
From encampments to peaceful marches to setting the construction site on fire, Atlanta abolitionists became a major threat.
Not only has Georgia’s governor announced a state of emergency, but countless protesters have been held at gunpoint and arrested. Over 40 face domestic terrorism charges.
This can be seen as fascism, and is bigger than just Atlanta. This is a future where anyone opposing injustice can be incarcerated for domestic terrorism. Where cops will be even more militarized. Where Black communities are silenced.
Atlanta’s Black residents don’t want this. Officials blame the movement on “outside agitators,” but the truth is that the growing international resistance to Cop City has been effective and powerful.
So, how can you join?
You can call and email your concern or contribute to the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, which covers activists’ legal fees. You can also write them letters while they’re incarcerated. If you are interested in other actions to support, head here.
There’s so much at stake. But the louder we get, the more we can fight this. And win.
