Sisters Jasmine and Nadia Evans went to Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina to meditate and relax. But suddenly, the sisters say, a white couple approached them, saying, “Y’all don’t even live here.”
Then violence ensued.
One of them, identified as Jack Andrew McLoughlin, choked Jasmine unconscious! And when Nadia tried to help, he began to suffocate her in the sand.
Even worse, after the brutal beating, the sisters’ call to 911 didn’t quite go as planned.
When Wrightsville police arrived, the couple accused the sisters of assaulting THEM. The police made no arrests. And their notes were concerning – they incorrectly described the sisters’ appearances and jotted down incomplete information for McLoughlin, who had a record of domestic violence already.
In fact, they didn’t even file a report!
After hospitalization for their injuries, Jasmine and Nadia ended up having to file the report themselves days later. “It didn’t seem like they took our attack seriously,” the sisters said. That’s why it took a viral Facebook post to raise awareness.
And Black folks on social media were adamant about seeing their case through.
It’s clear the police are NOT here to keep us safe. We don't need to wait on police to support Black women in our own communities or to get these stories told – this system is not made to protect us, so we need to protect each other!
