De’Von Bailey was being held by the police with his hands up as a robbery suspect. Imagine for a minute just how nerve wracking that feels. De’Von tried to run for it and, when he did, the police decided to take his life. Here’s why this leaves us with questions.
Police say De’Von was armed, but even if he was, this still doesn’t make sense. Having a gun is not a capitol offense! Body cam and security footage shows he never pointed a weapon or had one in hand when he was shot in the back. Now, De’Von’s parents are calling for an independent investigation.
Police initially claimed he went for a gun, but the footage shows that wasn’t true. When these killings happen, consider the fact that taking someone’s life is supposed to be a LAST RESORT and not a first response. The police disproportionately apply use of force to Black people.
After numerous mass shootings across the nation, where police have apprehended white shooters who have killed multiple people, we need to ask why Black people like De'Von are killed so easily. It doesn’t make sense and that’s why we need an INDEPENDENT investigation.
The police and their friends shouldn’t “investigate” themselves.
Take action by signing this petition telling District Attorney Dan May you support De'Von’s family in calling for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to look into this killing and give them the answers they need!
