Will There Be Justice for This Assassinated Black Woman?

Brazil is a country known for its police brutality and anti-Blackness.

And with the rhetoric of its new conservative president, Jair Bolsonaro, encouraging racism, homo- and transphobia, and all around prejudice, non-white Brazilians needed a politician on their side.

Marielle Franco was that person.

With so much hate being spewed, Rio de Janeiro’s Councilwoman Marielle Franco was a breath of fresh air that could possibly elicit radical positive change.

As such, on March 14, 2018, she and her driver were murdered when a hail storm of bullets was fired into her vehicle.

Her death incited global protests. And now, two former cops are being charged for her assassination.

The suspects are Ronnie Lessa and Elcio Vieira de Queiroz. Both men were part of police forces that carry out much of the right-wing violence and racism being made into law.

And while these two men are being charged for Marielle Franco’s assassination, one question remains with many: who hired them to do the dirty deed?

When that question is answered, perhaps real justice can arise.
