You Need To Know How Dangerous Policing Really Is

There are a lot of myths out there about the criminal justice system. You might have been told that crime is at an all-time high, for example. It’s not.

You might have also been told that police work is more dangerous than ever. It’s not, either.

Police killings are at a record low and police getting killed while on duty has been trending DOWNWARDS for decades. This is no different than violent crime, which has also been decreasing for decades.

According to reporting by Vox, “2015 was one of the safest years to be a police officer in America. Since 1960, only 2013 had fewer on-duty police officer deaths than 2015.”

The next time you hear anyone say there’s a “war on cops,” be sure to tell them that’s a blatant lie and there’s data to prove it. The Officer Down Memorial Page tracks these killings and it shows being a cop has actually gotten SAFER.

Being Black is still dangerous while being a cop has gotten less risky. We hope that police killing Black people will decrease as substantially as the shootings of on-duty officers have!
