Angie Stone’s passing on March 1, as she left a performance in Mobile, Alabama, shocked us all. And yet the legacy of the “No More Rain” songstress goes well beyond music. Did you know about these connections to the culture?

#1 Hip Hop Pioneer – Stone was a member of The Sequence, the first all-woman, Southern rap group signed to rap’s first label, Sugar Hill Records.

 #2 90’s Sitcom – Stone sang the intro to Girlfriends, one of the most popular and still beloved sitcoms from the 90s.

#3 Backup Singer – Stone has sung backup for some of the biggest names across all genres: D’Angelo, Lenny Kravitz, Mary J. Blige, and Bruno Mars.

#4 Black Screens – Stone appeared in movies and TV, playing roles in Moesha, The Fighting Temptations, Ride Along, and Girlfriends. She also made appearances in documentaries that uplifted our culture, such as Soundtrack for a Revolution.

#5 Broadway Chops – Stone starred as Big Mama Thornton in the musical Chicago. 

  Stone will be missed. As we honor her contributions to the culture, we are forever grateful for the gifts she gave through her iconic talent.
