Policing has gotten progressively safer for decades, but any time an officer brutalizes a Black person we hear excuses about officers “fearing for their lives.” Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, however, shows policing isn’t nearly as dangerous as they claim it is.
These jobs are MORE dangerous than being a cop!
1. Drivers/sales workers and truck drivers
Police don’t even fall in the top ten most dangerous jobs, but many occupations that involve a lot of driving do. These jobs are more than twice as dangerous, though they make a MUCH lower salary.
2. Construction and roofing workers
Slips and falls from deadly heights make roofing and construction jobs especially dangerous. Though they’re in separate categories, they have consistently shown to carry a high risk for fatality.
3. Farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural managers
These jobs are one of the few categories where fatalities actually exceeded injuries! Most of these deaths are transportation related, which also happens to account for a huge percentage of fatalities that occur during policing.
4. Fishers and related fishing workers
Though there are many other jobs that could be listed like loggers, iron and steel workers, and pilots, the deadliest jobs according to data are fishing related! They are more than 10 times more likely to be killed on the job than police – and hold the most risk of all.
