After George Floyd’s death, President Biden made a promise to his family – that he would sign the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act by exactly a year later. Well, that date has passed.
And Floyd’s sister, Bridgett Floyd, has words for him.
While Biden invited Floyd’s family to the White House, Bridgett boycotted the meeting in Washington. Instead, she stayed in Minneapolis to celebrate his life. “Biden … broke a promise,” Floyd said. “Get your people in order.”
This all comes in conjunction with many activists, like lawyer and organizer Derecka Purnell, pointing out that the Justice in Policing Act “could not have even saved George Floyd’s life.” It plans to ban chokeholds, qualified immunity, and racial profiling.
But it also designates $750 million to police.
Officers have killed at least 1,068 people since Floyd, and many are questioning the need for more police funding. “I really thought that my brother's death would be the last police brutality case,” Bridgett lamented. “But as we all can see, they are added again and again and again."
It’s already one thing that Floyd’s Act may not go as far as politicians claim – but it wasn’t even implemented when promised! Like Bridgett Floyd, we should demand what we need instead of letting a system that isn't interested in our liberation disappoint us over and over again.
