Kirinya Prison was reported by Vice News to be surprisingly transparent in comparison to others around the world, alleging decent treatment for those incarcerated there. But Kirinya, like any prison, has been “tainted by human rights abuse,” from intense overcrowding to violent incidents of torture.
Spain
Aranjuez Prison acknowledges the pain of separating incarcerated parents from their children. So, its family unit allows some children to live with their parents. Families get to maintain their critical bonds, but that means kids still have to be raised behind bars.
Colombia
Colombia's El Buen Pastor prison for women is known for ridiculous overcrowding - cells meant for two house 20 people. Fascinatingly enough, it’s also known for the incarcerated women’s annual beauty pageants.
Norway
The “world’s most humane prison” is allegedly Norway’s Halden Prison. People incarcerated here can cook their own food, record music, and exist without prison bars. This prison’s recividism rate is only 20%. But even here, racial discrimination STILL persists behind prison walls.
Knowing how violent the U.S. prison system is, there’s definitely a long way to go compared to these prisons. But what if none of us, from any part of the world, would have to be put in cages - even the "nice" ones? Could it be that the most “humane” prison is no prison at all?
