In 1963, Kenya gained independence from Britain, and while it marked an important part in history, it didn’t go without much suffering.
In 2013, Britain paid Kenya 19.9 million pounds to help compensate for the Kenyans who suffered during the 1950s when they led a strong rebellion against British rule.
From the early 1950s to the 1960s, the Mau Mau rebellion was led by local Kenyans who demanded their independence and freedom from Britain, and decided to fight for it.
They fought British authorities, and their allies. And did so successfully. The rebellion ended in 1960, and led to Kenya's independence three years later. This inspired many Black activists such as Malcolm X and Nelson Mandela.
No matter how small an act of activism or uprising is, it can be pivotal in sparking larger movements of fighting injustice. Each of us has the power to create change and inspire liberation.
