California Is Taking A Step In The Right Direction

There’s no doubt that police have been OUT OF CONTROL. It seems like every day we see another news story of a Black person being killed because police got scared or thought they were a suspect. Well, a proposed law in California could change things.

Assembly Bill 392 is a reform law that addresses when the police can or cannot use deadly force. Assemblywoman Shirley Weber introduced it after the tragic killing of Stephon Clark in Sacramento. Police shot him several times outside of his Grandmother’s home as he tried to enter.

The stories of police killings are endless. This bill is supposed to make it easier to hold officers who use reckless force accountable. Some police say the law will put them at risk by making them hesitant, and some say the law won’t have much effect on them at all.

There are also advocates of the law who agree with the police who say it won’t do as much as people think. The Los Angeles Times reports that it “does little more than codify into California criminal code standards that already exist in civil law and in the policies of some progressive departments."

Even if Assembly Bill 392 doesn’t go far enough, we should be able to agree that it IS a step in the right direction. Killing Black people shouldn’t be something police can shrug off as an accident any longer. Our lives matter and there should be consequences when we’re killed for NOTHING!
