Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger cried in court in what seemed like remorse after “accidentally” killing Botham Jean. After Black America was encouraged to forgive and forget, there’s a new development: she’s taking action on her case.
The former officer is appealing her 10-year prison sentence! Despite the remarkable show of forgiveness and concern Black people gave after she killed Jean, she doesn’t even want to complete what’s considered a light sentence for the murder.
Let’s not forget what this trial exposed.
Before the killing, Guyger and her partner sent racist text messages back and forth to one another! Her former partner has ALSO killed an unarmed Black man. On top of that, there were also suspicious jurors AND a mysterious death.
The jurors were extraordinarily lenient with Guyger, and said they didn’t want to be “too harsh.” Also, key Black witnesses were abused – one of whom, Joshua Brown, was later murdered!
Things worked out in Amber’s favor, and that still wasn’t good enough.
Guyger’s defense team claims insufficient evidence to convict her of the murder – they want acquittal!
This situation shows that trying to get justice through the courts is an uphill battle, when a racist system treats Black lives like they’re disposable and goes out of its way to coddle killer cops who fake remorse in an attempt to literally get away with murder.
