While driving in an unmarked car, wearing plain clothes, Florida police officer Nouma Raja shot and killed a Black man named Corey Jones as he waited for roadside assistance in October of 2015.
There was no rhyme or reason behind the shooting - and the former cop couldn’t convince a jury there was. He was convicted for his crime.
Corey Jones was loved by his family and his community. He was a drummer who simply needed assistance. But instead of receiving the help he requested, he was executed - shot several times as he attempted to get to safety. Now, the officer who did it will pay the price.
Nouma Raja is the first Florida police officer to be convicted for a shooting in DECADES - it hasn’t happened since 1989. He’s now facing a mandatory minimum that could land him in prison for over 25 years.
People protested for Corey after the shooting. And most probably thought their protests would result in no conviction, as cops killing Black people often does, but this outcome is inspiring many.
Even though Corey is still gone, his family is happy with this decision. The family attorney, Benjamin Crump, who also represented the family of Trayvon Martin, said Corey “did not die in vain.” Hopefully, this will send a message to any other cops out there like Nouma Raja.
