Content Warning: The following story is about rape and sexual assault.
Former Chattanooga police officer Desmond Logan put in a plea for his crimes, but what he did is shocking and unfortunately doesn’t get punished enough. This officer was using his power and hiding behind his badge in the worst of ways, abusing women and wreaking havoc.
Times Free Press reported the TERRIBLE story: “Former Chattanooga police officer Desmond Logan reached a plea agreement last week, in which he admitted to raping three women in his custody between 2015 and 2018 as well as shooting a Taser at a fourth woman.”
An ongoing county investigation could bring more charges for Logan. His former Chief said, “Desmond Logan is not what the men and women of the Chattanooga Police Department represent. He is an absolute disgrace.” But it’s actually not that simple either.
In 2018, another officer from Chattanooga was arrested, indicted, and fired after allegations of sexual battery and kidnapping came out. This problem has come up before and it’s happened across the country. Just keep in mind when officers violate, not everyone comes forward.
Police who are supposed to serve and protect don’t always do those things and as these cases make clear, it’s going to take a lot more than diversity and body cameras to stop these problems. This isn’t isolated - police abuse of power is a problem at the core of policing.
