Since his teenage years, Dr. Cornel West has shown up and fought for his people. Heavily influenced by the Black Panthers, he’s been pushing and has never been afraid to do this one courageous thing.

Speak the truth! West has been speaking truth to power for decades – often when others refused to. First, by demanding a Black studies course be added to the curriculum at his high school. During the Obama era, he critiqued the former president’s moves when few others had the guts.

He called out white colleges and universities for using Black students to promote “superficial diversity” to prospective students.

Following the mass shooting in East Buffalo, West condemned Trump for enabling white supremacists to wage war against Black people. “Trump is not out there with a gun, but he leads a campaign continuing what Malcolm X called a war against black and colored people,” West said.

He’s not just talking the talk, he’s doing the work, as in his New York Times Bestseller “Race Matters,” first published in 1993. His work, rooted in philosophy, argued that unregulated capitalism was killing the souls, minds, and bodies of Black folks.

Beyond books, he’s released multiple spoken word albums lending both sound and critical teachings to the movement for our liberation.

Like West, we can never be afraid to speak the truth when fighting for Black liberation!
