Faye Wattleton has spent decades fighting for what she believes in. She made significant strides that deserve applause. You may not have heard her name until now, but you very likely know about her work.

Wattleton spent decades fighting for reproductive rights as the president of Planned Parenthood. She's primarily responsible for the organization's current role as a  grassroots agency with huge lobbying power.

But while many lobbyists believed in sugarcoating the truth, Wattleton refused.

She made it clear that Black women were a priority of her work. When white organizations tried to leave us out of the reproductive justice movement, Wattleton ensured that Planned Parenthood sponsored 25,000 copies of "We Remember: African Women Are For Reproductive Freedom" pamphlets–which helped spur the reproductive justice movement.

Wattleton knew this one crucial truth.

Black women's health is directly related to the betterment of our entire community. She wasn’t about to let those in power forget it!

Wattleton’s work is a reminder of one essential truth. The fight for reproductive rights is about much more than abortion access. It's about protecting Black women, and therefore all of our people, from the fatality of a systemically racist medical industry.
