Mickey Windecker was a middle-aged anti-racist activist who appeared at the Denver racial justice scene in 2020, donning fatigues and driving a silver hearse. But it was all a lie.

In reality, Windecker was a rapist, domestic abuser, and fed. The FBI paid him over $20,000 cash to infiltrate and thwart racial justice.

As he rose into leadership, Windecker relayed activists’ discussions about revolution. He amassed tons of weapons. Then, Windecker tried roping Black activists into a sinister conspiracy to assassinate Colorado’s Attorney General.

Fortunately, they refused. One person was arrested and assigned probation on weapons charges, but Windecker still lost. Activists swiftly shared their suspicions down the grapevine. Windecker was exiled within days.

The criminal legal system has always used informants to neutralize and sabotage Black movements. It sets traps to kill and incarcerate Black liberation radicals, inciting fear and mistrust in those left on the field.

But that doesn’t mean we should disband community defense.

They wouldn’t bother dismantling our movements if we weren’t a threat. Denver community members strategically collaborated to address suspicions and protect each other from Windecker.

It’s these skills that keep us strong. Our future looks like their worst nightmare: dismantling them first.
