#1: Muhummad Ali – One of the first major Black athletes to reject white control over his talent and his body, Ali not only converted to Islam and changed his name but also refused to be inducted into the U.S. Army on political grounds. Several other Black athletes followed suit.

#2: Tommie Smith and John Carlos – These Olympians’ iconic 1968 protest ignited debates worldwide as they used their platform, literally, to demand justice.

#3: Colin Kaepernick – When this NFL player decided to kneel in protest of police brutality, he ignited a national conversation on race that has yet to end. The athlete is now in the process of raising millions to advance Black economic prosperity.

#4: Coco Gauff – On the court, she’s defeated two tennis greats. Off the court, this teenage superstar has consistently demanded racial justice for our people.

#5: Gwen Berry – Not only did this Olympic hammer thrower refuse to face the American flag while on the podium in 2021, but she also has made it known publicly that her first job is standing up for her community!

These athletes used their fame and talent to stand up for justice. We all have a role to play in fighting for our liberation.
