Donald Trump’s First Step Act prison reforms were praised by many for accomplishing what others hadn’t.
The reforms the First Step Act has implemented to change bad policies - like “three strikes” and mandatory minimums - are good, but there’s already a problem.
The First Step Act needs about $75 million for five years, but the Trump Administration’s 2020 budget only puts aside $14 million for his prison reform law. That’s not NEARLY enough!
We already know that we can’t trust Trump, but this is HIS reform law. But clearly, he only cares about one project.
The 2020 budget funds over $8 BILLION for Trump’s wall. $5 billion of that is “for construction of the border wall, and $506 million to hire over 2,800 additional law enforcement officers.” WHAT?
Trump has his priorities all mixed up - as usual. Instead of paying BILLIONS to build a great wall, he could be following through on prison reform and serving the greater good.
Until he does, the damage his party has already done to Black America through the criminal justice system will continue.
The First Step Act needs to be fully funded. If it’s not, then it’s not a “first step” at all. It’s just another broken promise. It’s a step backward.
