There’s a generational divide in many Black families, and it’s affecting the way we approach relationships, parenting, and mental distress.

But if these trends continue, the effect might actually be beneficial for future generations. Here’s why the impact of this divide could actually be good news for our family troubles.

When it comes to marriage, younger generations are less likely to follow the trend of staying in bad marriages or even getting married in the first place.

But don’t worry – they still believe in the power of Black love. They just understand that an empowered woman, for example, means the entire family is stronger.

“Whooping” children who misbehave is a long-standing tradition. However, more recent research suggests that today’s Black parents are more likely to use alternative methods of discipline – and this can have huge positive impacts on our families.

Mention feeling sad or anxious to some older Black people, and you’ll be advised to go to church or “man up.” However, more and more Black people are seeking therapy instead, and when we can free our minds from trauma through professional support, we all benefit.

Black families continue to withstand the effects of white supremacy on our relationships. Based on these trends, however, we’re on the right track to ensuring strong healthy Black families. Let’s keep learning and searching for ways to heal ourselves!
