Few bands tried to live the ideals of the 60s and 70s as wholeheartedly as Sly and the Family Stone. They were the first multi-racial, multi-gendered, multi-genre band. Their empowering hit tracks had a massive impact on music and on Black culture. Here are a few songs and lyrics to check out:
“I am no better and neither are you/ We are the same whatever we do… we got to live together.”
Their spirit was encapsulated in this anthem of tolerance and respect.
“Everybody is a star/ I can feel it when you shine on me/ I love you for who you are/ Not the one you feel you need to be.”
Sly & The Family Stone’s songs were relentlessly encouraging individuals just to be themselves.
“You can make it if you try/ Push a little harder/ Think a little deeper/ Don't let the plastic/ Bring you down.”
Another anthem to resilience and Black liberation - if we keep pushing, we’ll eventually reach the promised land!
Music has always been part of our liberation efforts. From drums to funk to trap music. How we express ourselves and tell our stories matter. Now that you’ve become more familiar, how do you feel about their impact?
