Donald Trump has scheduled more executions than ANY president in at least a century! Now, his Justice Department has expanded federal rules regarding capital punishment. What’s become possible has led to outrage from many.
Before President Trump leaves office, he’s pushing through a range of “midnight regulations:” rushed, last-minute rules to pass before he loses power. One allows the return of outdated methods of execution like firing squads, gas, and electrocutions! It’s part of a larger plan.
Of five executions Trump is rushing, four are Black, and one would be the first woman to be executed in nearly 70 years. The death penalty is a directly linked to the legacy of lynching, which makes this a particularly upsetting for a very important reason.
This expansion could allow Trump to use methods that are still on the books in death penalty states, like hangings!
The death penalty is clearly racist. It’s an injustice because of who is killed and who isn’t. This HAS to be dealt with.
Over 70% of the world has abolished the death penalty. This barbaric practice is frowned upon by nations that consider themselves democracies, but the U.S. continues even as public approval of it is at an all time low.
It’s past time to demand the death penalty is abolished in every state and at the federal level!
