It was New York in the summertime, and May Enoch and Arthur Harris were in love. They’d come so far to get here – so thought they’d enjoy themselves! Arthur popped into a bar to grab a drink, while May waited outside.

Suddenly, a white man grabbed her! She let out a scream.

Harris damn near jumped out of the bar to rescue her. But the man refused to let her go!

What he did next was what many of us might in his situation – but unfortunately, he didn’t know the man was actually an undercover cop.

Enoch was so beautiful – and racism so prevalent – that the white man imagined she was a sex worker and aimed to arrest her!

After a struggle, Harris stabbed the assailant to free Enoch from the man’s clutches – killing him! They ran. But when word got out about what happened, all Hell broke loose.

New York City exploded as white citizens searched for Harris. They lashed out at any Black person they saw, breaking limbs and smashing faces!

Despite the tragic outcome, Harris defended himself and defended someone he loved. He was fearless in the face of white supremacist violence – and we should hold those same sentiments today. It’s always our right to defend ourselves.
