If it wasn’t for Alonzo Carter, music icon MC Hammer may have not achieved the amount of success that he did in the music industry. That’s because Carter was the lead choreographer for Hammer’s music videos and performances. It’s an experience that Carter carries with him throughout his latest leadership role.
The Bay area native has been serving his community for decades after he left choreography. Carter is currently an assistant football coach for San Jose State University, and his coaching career has only reinforced his ability to bring together people.
After the death of George Floyd, Carter assembled over 300 minority coaches online to speak about social injustice.
“As leaders, leaders of men, it’s our responsibility and it’s our duty to make sure that we’re educated and we share each other’s views on how we think we can help solve the problem,” he said, referring to the problem of racial injustice.
We don’t have to be in an official position of leadership to fight against racism and anti-Blackness. But like Carter we can use our skills and our voices right where we are. Liberation takes all of us.
