Protests Against A District Attorney Led To A Huge Threat

Jackie Lacey was once celebrated for being the first Black person to be Los Angeles’ District Attorney. And while there’s no doubting this is a huge accomplishment, how she’s been doing the job is a problem many Black people can no longer ignore.

On her watch only people of color were sentenced to death as of 2019. Black people accounted for almost half of people sentenced, while she refused to prosecute police officers who have killed Black people! No surprise here that she’s been protested against regularly, but something terrible recently happened.

When Black Lives Matter activists, alongside family members of police brutality victims, protested outside her home, Lacey’s husband pulled a GUN on them and threatened to shoot them all.

She said he’s “sorry,” but this still highlights a much bigger problem.

If Jackie Lacey was doing her job in a way that reflects fairness and racial justice, no one would be protesting her for doing the opposite. She’s faced off with progressive challengers whose race against her makes a major point.

If we want our communities to look different, we can make that happen! When it comes to criminal justice, electing district attorneys that are not working against us is a starting place.

If they continue to keep and abuse their power, nothing will change for the better.
