She Had To Take Police Work Into Her Own Hands
Fatoumata Camara was attacked and robbed by a group of teens in the Bronx, who taunted her for being a Muslim. Naturally, she went to the police.
After it became clear the police weren’t really trying to get to the bottom of things, she did it herself!
Fatoumata told HuffPost, “I wasn’t going to be one of those cases that got abandoned,” and said she would “get justice for what happened [to her] that night.” So guess what? She went and found the footage of the attack HERSELF when the cops wouldn't.
Her attack is under investigation now as a possible hate crime, but it’s a shame that she had to do the police work herself. What happened to Fatoumata was traumatic. Not to mention that tragic night cost her $4000.00 in medical bills as well as an academic award, $500, her passport, and insurance card all being lost!
No one should ever have to go through what she went through because of who they are. Black Muslims are under attack and hate crimes, which are increasing against them, target them double - because of race and religion!
What purpose are the police serving if they aren’t even looking into the issues they’re supposed to be solving? People shouldn’t be out here solving crimes against them like they’re in a movie! Fatoumata is brave, but she shouldn’t have had to do that.
