The night of April 17, 16-year-old Mikayla Miller’s mother, Calvina Strothers, called 911. Miller had been “jumped by a group of kids” in Massachusetts, and had the bloody face to prove it. The next day, she was found dead!
When Strothers called the police again, she says they THREATENED her.
Strothers says that Sergeant Sean O’Brien told her not to contact the media about her daughter’s death, “or else [her] daughter’s sexuality would be exposed.” What kind of a threat is that? And it’s not all.
Weeks later, they ruled Miller’s death a suicide. She’d been found hanging from a tree branch with a black leather belt around her neck. But, Strothers says not only was the tree too small to hold her weight, but the belt wasn’t even hers!
Not only did they threaten Miller’s mother because her daughter was LGBTQ, but investigators “weren’t able to obtain” video evidence from Miller’s home, where the initial assault occurred. They claim the system “rebooted.”
Still, Strother refuses to play these games. She’s demanding justice for her child.
If her mother hadn't spoken out despite the threats, we wouldn't know Mikayla Miller’s story today. Police behaved this way because she was an LGBTQ, Black girl.
Officers already have a history of witness, suspect, and victim intimidation. That’s why it’s crucial to expose the truth about what happens to us!
