The Woman King, produced by and starring Viola Davis, recently premiered. It raked in $19 million at the box office.

But some REFUSED to see it — we’re not talking about white people!

Many Black people boycotted the film, stating it’s whitewashed history! The film focuses on the Dahomey people of West Africa, paying homage to the Agojie warriors — the most powerful woman-led army in history.

Many were angry the film painted the Dahomey and Agojie as fighting to ban slavery when historically, they actively participated in genocide and transatlantic-slavery!

Originally, Lupita Nyong’o was cast as Nawi — it’s assumed she quit the role after researching Dahomey's history. Ironically, the Black Panther’s Dora Milaje warriors are based on the Agojie!

While Nyong’o’s integrity should be praised, that doesn’t mean Davis should be villainized.

While holding our community accountable for participating in whitewashing history is important, remember white supremacy is the real enemy.

For those supporting “#BoycottTheWomanKing,” where’s this energy for ALL 56.9% of White Hollywood?

Is it a coincidence this boycott is happening for a film where empowered, Black, dark-skinned women are the leads? Responding to boycotters, Davis stated, “you’re sending a message that Black women can’t lead a box office globally, and [you’re] supporting that narrative.”

Before “picking a side,” remember white supremacy wants to keep us divided.
