#1: The Wiz – When The Wiz showed up in theatres, we saw how eager our community was to see positive Black images on the silver screen. We flocked to the theater, making it an immediate blockbuster. We loved the themes of self-discovery and liberation.

#2: Poetic Justice – This film not only gave us a sweet love story, but the main character, a poet, showed us the power of language.

#3: Soul Food – This iconic family drama validated everyone’s Big Mama, or Grandmother, showing how love of family has its own kind of power.

#4: Love & Basketball – When Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps portrayed this realistic “girl next door” love story meets sports movie, it showed our children how real love can grow between friends.

#5: The Best Man – While there were numerous hilarious, yet raunchy scenes in this family drama, the theme of friendship surmounts everything by showing us how the bonds of friendship are as important as romantic love.

If we surround ourselves with positive, authentic Black images that show how powerful we are in our love for each other, then we can experience a sense of joy, resilience and empowerment in our lives!
