Black moms can end up in jail just like ANY of us can and, when they do, it can affect their employment, stability, their children, and more. That’s why activists around the nation worked hard to free Black mamas in a really inspiring way.
The National Bail Out collective describes themselves as a Black-led “and Black-centered collective of abolitionist organizers, lawyers and activists building a community-based movement to support our folks.”
They’ve bailed out Black mamas for Mother’s Day since 2017!
A lot of people suffer in jail for unreasonable amounts of time just because they can’t pay their way out. Bail discriminates against poor Black people and vulnerable Black women get stuck in the system this way.
Collective member Mary Hooks came up with the idea. Since doing so, they’ve bailed out hundreds of Black moms and raised over a million dollars. She’s actively spoken about how her work follows the tradition of enslaved Africans buying the freedom of their family members.
The #FreeBlackMamas push is a real movement. We’re proud of the Black folks working hard to make sure Black mamas get freed from cages and we’re sending love to all the mothers who made it out.
