Stephon Marbury was a talent in the NBA. Yet the league that the basketball legend once loved so much treated him poorly when he was experiencing depression.
In 2007, Marbury’s father passed away, and shortly after his shoe brand, Starbury, shut down. The Brooklyn native started the Starbury brand to create affordable shoes for his community, but the business soon dwindled.
Marbury left America in 2010 and went to China to play in the Chinese Basketball Association. While many think of going overseas to play basketball is a downgrade, for Marbury it was one of the best decisions he made.
The basketball star is recognized as the most successful player in CBA history, but he still gave back to his hometown. He even donated masks to New York during the pandemic.
Sometimes, our environments can hold us back and not provide the resources we need to better ourselves. So don’t be afraid to change your surroundings to help grow into a leader that can go back and help improve upon the problems that forced us to leave in the first place.
