In a recent campaign stop in Atlanta, Donald Trump tried to appeal to Black people. His favorite talking points: the strong economy, with Black unemployment lower than ever. That’s true! But we shouldn’t believe the hype.
A closer look at the numbers reveals more than they want us to know.
A New York Times comparison between Obama’s jobs numbers and Trump’s indicate that Trump seems to have inherited falling unemployment from Obama. In fact, the rate of job creation has actually slowed down under Trump.
Also, though more Black people have jobs, we’re making less money under Trump because not all jobs are good jobs.
A new Bloomburg study has also shown that most people in low-wage jobs will stay in low-wage jobs, and never work their way out of poverty.
Trump also claims that his tax cuts have helped middle-class and low-income people save money, but that’s not really true either. Meanwhile, the super-rich benefited a ton.
We always have to do our due diligence when it comes to politics - on both sides. All Democrats’ promises - around criminal justice reform, economics, universal health care, and more - also need to be evaluated carefully!
Don’t fall for the hype.
