It’s a modern-day reimagining of the classic ‘90s sitcom, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” filled with the struggle, inequity, and reality of being Black in today’s America.
In the trailer, we’re reintroduced to Will in his home of West Philadelphia - a city riddled with gang violence and police brutality. When Will is arrested for gun possession, a gun he uses to protect himself, his mother sends him off to live with Uncle Phil.
From there, we’re taken to Bel-Air, a sharp contrast to the poverty-stricken environment Will knew all too well. Can you say racial wealth gap?
There are a few nostalgic moments, as well, like when Will first meets Jazzy Jeff and when Carlton does his famous “Carlton dance.”
Embedded deep within the original sitcom was this poignant narrative about the complex reality of being Black in America. This modern trailer simply told that story.
And while there are no intentions to make “Bel-Air” into a full-length film, the world is hoping that this gritty parody of the Fresh Prince will make it to the big screen someday soon.
