White supremacists see a lot of opportunity in coronavirus (COVID-19), but one of the things they hope to do is build. Racist ideas and conspiracies are the norm for them, but right now those ideas are being shaped by something we didn’t see coming.
Racist narratives about societal collapse and scapegoating of different oppressed people are methods bigots wanting to say “I told you so” are using to recruit and build their movements. Of course, anti-Black racism is central to this sort of issue. We have good reason to be concerned.
Some white supremacists have taken matters into their own hands, hoping to make matters worse by planning attacks and using coronavirus as a bio-weapon. It’s important to remember that these moments require something from us all they hope to undermine.
We have to cooperate with one another and be considerate of our communities. Black people have to organize together in the face of record unemployment and food shortages. White supremacists want to distract us from surviving in the face of a new threat we’ve never seen.
It’s good for us to remain informed, aware, and proactive. Remember not to panic and to practice good standards that prioritize public health. White supremacists want us to be doing the complete opposite, and they’re organizing themselves by saying as much.
