She Was Pregnant And Got Shot, Now She's In Jail
Marshae Jones was five months pregnant when a dispute took a wrong turn. After it was all said and done, Marshae was shot in the stomach, and her pregnancy came to a terrible end.
Also terrifying? The DISGUSTING way authorities have responded to her tragedy.
MARSHAE was charged with manslaughter, not the shooter! The police claim it was her fault for being in a fight in the first place. Nevermind the fact she was SHOT and miscarried. They blamed her for it all. The shooter even went free!
According to Vox, “Alabama is one of 38 states with a fetal homicide law that recognizes a fetus as a potential victim of a crime against a pregnant woman.” This gives Alabama the power to victim-blame in situations like this and more!
The office of District Attorney Lynneice O. Washington has made it clear that they think this situation is “tragic,” but they’re unsure whether to pursue charges or not.
Well, we can help them to do the right thing by reminding them who the victim is here!
Black women’s pregnancies have a legacy of being criminalized and, when they’re survivors of violence, they’re often blamed and punished for it! Make it known you don’t stand for the nonsense this case represents by signing and sharing this petition!
