These three stories were so powerful that they commanded headlines across the nation. Yet, when all was said and done, they were never solved. Today, there are still so many unanswered questions that many wonder what truly happened.
#1 AD King’s death – Just 15 months after MLK was assassinated, his younger brother Alfred “AD” King was found floating face down in his swimming pool. King was known to be an excellent swimmer and no water was found in his lungs.
#2 Carrie Nelson – In 1911, the Nelson family was starving. When the father stole a cow to feed the family, an angry white mob stormed their home. When the Nelsons tried to defend themselves, the mob abducted the family, violated the mother, and hanged her and her 12-year-old son on a local bridge. But while Black papers reported one-year-old Carrie survived and was adopted, other sources say she simply disappeared.
#3 Marsha P. Johnson – When an NYC club was raided by police in 1969, this young activist, known for feeding the hungry and helping the sick, threw a rock. Though she was constantly harassed by police, she still resisted their attempts to harm clubgoers. In 1992, her body was found in the Hudson River. Police refused to investigate.
Though not solved, these cases still reveal the high stakes in our fight for liberation. Could it be that they were meant to haunt us today? May their stories live on.
