This is Why We Refuse to Praise America for "Ending" Slavery

While reparations is being debated by some Democratic presidential hopefuls, other parts of White America apparently want a big thank you from Black folks for ending slavery at all. You read that foolery right.

On Fox’s “Outnumbered,” conservative commentator Katie Pavlich made the following ridiculous - and totally inaccurate - statement: “America came along as the first country to end [slavery] within 150 years. And we get no credit for trying to move forward and trying to make good on that.”

Here’s why White America won’t be getting any thanks from us.

Bernice King, daughter of civil rights icon Martin Luther King, Jr., put it best. She took to Twitter to check any American who believes that this country ever tried to move forward.

“America doesn’t deserve credit for ‘ending slavery.’ What America ended (on paper) reflects an ideology and a quest for power at the expense of humanity that [is] still prevalent in the policies, spirit and mores of this nation.”

She went on to add that “a nation gets no credit for ‘ending’ a violent atrocity that it allowed and cultivated on its soil and in other nations.”

“Truth must precede and accompany reconciliation. Truth: People who point out racism and its dangers aren’t dividing us. Racism is. It’s killing people, too.”
